Meet Our Workshop Facilitator: Sherryl Sewepagaham

Sherryl is a Cree-Dene elementary music educator and award-winning traditional vocalist who will be leading a drum and song workshop at National Aboriginal Day at Trout Lake.

Join Sherryl in a cultural workshop where she actively engages participants in interactive activities related to First Nations and Métis music, dance, and stories from a variety of historical, cultural, and social contexts. Participants will create percussive and vocal sounds that accompany and interpret legends and will assess and analyze how the music may evoke thoughts, images and feelings. Participants will learn songs in the oral tradition and perform songs incorporating traditional rhythms, language, drum-playing techniques, and learn sharing within the cultural protocol.

This interactive workshop allows a hands-on experience playing traditional, hide drums, rattles or sticks and learning Canadian First Nations drum songs including the history and protocol, and the inter-generational oral tradition of song preservation. First Nations songs include social and newly composed children’s traditional songs.
