Git Hayetsk, which means “people of the copper shield” in Sm’algyax, is the name of this internationally known West Coast First Nations dancing group. Led by Mike and Mique’l Dangeli, the Git Hayetsk group has performed around the world in countries such as Canada, the United States, Austria, Malaysia, Germany and Japan.
Mike Dangeli is from the Nisga’a, Tlingit, Tsetsaut and Tsimshian Nations and is also an artist and carver; many of the masks that the Git Hayetsk have used in their performances have been carved by him. Mique’l Dangeli is from the Tsimshian Nation of Metlakatla Indian Community. She is a curator and author as well as a dancer and choreographer for Git Hayetsk.
The copper shield referenced in the group’s name is, for the First Nations of the Northwest Coast, traditionally considered to be the highest and most prestigious form of ceremonial wealth, owned only by those within the community who have the highest status. The copper shield symbolizes wealth, prestige, power, strength and peace, characteristics the Git Hayetsk strive to represent and uphold through their dances.
